EIGHT

Sabrina went to the ladies’ room and splashed her face with water.

The terror of seeing Jake beaten and bruised and being led around by Creed and his men had confirmed her worst fears. Jake’s life was in danger. But it wasn’t that truth that had sent her hiding out. It was the doubts about him that she’d allowed to creep into her mind. That Jake had left her again just as he had five years earlier.

She had done her best to push them away but they’d managed to keep popping up and breaking her heart. She should never have doubted him.

She composed herself, then walked back into the squad room. Kent, along with Sheriff Thompson and Deputy Josh Knight, who was the head of the department’s SWAT team, were going over scenarios for rescuing Jake. Thanks to Max, they knew the location of Creed’s base, the old factory on the industrial area of town, but they had no confirmation that Jake was being kept there. They couldn’t breach the factory until they knew for certain where Creed was holding him.

Lord, please keep him safe until we can find him.

She surprised herself with that silent cry for help. God hadn’t been there for her when her brother and her dad had died. Why would He help her now?

Kent turned to look at her, regret shining in his face that he hadn’t trusted her earlier intuition that something had happened to Jake. He motioned her over to join in on the planning. It was already late in the evening but the office hadn’t slowed. They were already hours behind that video and each moment that they didn’t find Jake was another hour of uncertainty.

“I’m putting together a team to survey the factory,” Josh was telling them. “Once we have confirmation that Agent Harris is there, we’ll wait for the signal to breach the factory.” Josh was a former Navy SEAL and had built the department’s SWAT team from scratch. He was currently focusing on training duties since being injured in a confrontation with a suspect but he was the most experienced tactically that the Mercy County Sheriff’s Office had.

Sheriff Thompson looked over his suggestions then gave her okay. “Let’s be careful on this. I’ve been in touch with Agent Price at the DEA and he’s offered assistance in case we need it.”

“They’re not going to help?” Sabrina asked her.

She shook her head. “Agents understand going in undercover that they risk being captured. They’re trained to think on their feet and take risks. The agency is still concerned about preserving the operation and discovering Paul Creed’s supplier. He plays a much bigger role in the drug trade around the state and country.”

“So they’re just willing to sacrifice one agent in order to preserve their operation?” Sabrina couldn’t imagine working for an agency that wouldn’t intervene to rescue one of its agents when they were in trouble.

Sheriff Thompson must have seen her horror. She took Sabrina’s arm. “The DEA is a big agency with a lot of red tape.
